Track of the Rainbow Serpent

Neighborhood: University City / West Philadelphia
May 30, 2004 - August 28, 2004
Thirty contemporary Australian Aboriginal paintings offer a provocative window into the Aboriginal view of the world and the cosmos in this unique new exhibition, which originated through an unusual creative dialogue between Aboriginal artists and UPM Consulting Curator and cultural anthropologist Dr. Peggy Reeves Sanday. In 1948, Dr. Sanday's father, Frank Reeves, "discovered" Wolf Creek Crater, a large meteorite crater in Western Australia. In the 1990s, Dr. Sanday visited the crater for the first time and discovered that it was part of the traditional territory of several Aboriginal groups. Determined to investigate the crater's meaning in Aboriginal culture, she quickly learned that, as "traditional owners" of the crater, the Aboriginal people were prohibited from direct discussion about their sacred knowledge. However, they agreed to tell their stories through collaborative paintings using the unconventional medium of canvas. Her quest for a broader perspective on the meteor crater evolved into an exciting exploration of Aboriginal aesthetics and cosmology, where the Rainbow Serpent plays a pivotal role as the primary creative agent, not just of the crater but of all features of the natural environment. The exhibition features a short video and photos of the Aboriginal artists, the anthropologist, and the crater that brought them together. 1st floor Merle-Smith Changing Exhibitions Gallery.
