Beaches: 340 miles of coastline surround the Island. Within that stretch there are a number of beautiful sandy beaches. One of the most recognized is Jones Beach. It boasts a 2,413 acre park which includes: a2 mile boardwalk, health walk, bike path, fishing facilities, pools, band shell, shuffle board, pitch-putt golf, Boardwalk restaurant and more. Fishing: The fish are biting all year round with a nice variety including striped bass, fluke, flounder & bluefish. Fresh and salt water locations throughout Long Island offer the best in fishing. Maybe you prefer sportfishing. Sharks, marlins and more. Depending upon your taste and style you can fish alone or sign up with one of the many party boats.

Golf: From the East end to points West, Long Island has over 100 golf courses. Call ahead since many courses have a reservation system. Or maybe try one of the many “short” courses if you just have time for a quick nine. They are great for the beginner, junior or senior golfer as well as a business outing. Greens fees are also pretty reasonable. USGA ratings measure course difficulty. The Senior PGA Golf Tournament takes place in Jericho every August. For information call 674-GOLF. The Long Island Golf Classic is also an annual August event, played in Farmingdale. For tickets and information call 249-0701. In June 2002, Bethpage Golf Course will host the US Open.

Wineries: Long Island has some of the most sought-after wines around. Over 20 wineries line a good part of the North Fork of the Island. The Harvest season starts in late September & runs thru October. Most vineyards host special harvest celebrations which include wine & cheese party’s, concerts and hayrides. Pick some pumpkins up along the way or stop at the many farm stands selling apple pies, hot buttered corn, Long Island potatoes or maybe some fall flowers.

Entertainment: Explore the concert scene. After a day at the beach, spend an evening at the Jones Beach outdoor theatre 516-221-1000. Bring a pizza or some sandwiches and picnic on the bay or tailgate in the parking lot before the show. Maybe you prefer the indoors? If so, check out the Westbury Music Fair 516-334-0800. Both offer top names in the entertainment industry. The Island also has many comedy clubs.

Restaurants: There is a wide variety of food choices on Long Island. Many favorites are advertised right here in the Long Island Map. Choose from Seafood, Chinese, Steak, Japanese, Italian, Deli, Diner, Bagels, Portuguese, Turkish, Vegetarian or Buffet style.

Lighthouses: There are twenty-two Lighthouses in and around Long Island. The following Lighthouses have tours for a small fee: The Fire Island Lighthouse Built in 1858 is Long Island’s tallest lighthouse. Walk to top 182 winding steps. For info call: 631-661-4876. Horton Point Lighthouse built in 1857 is on the North Fork of Long Island. This lighthouse has a nautical museum with many displays of artifacts relating to the sea. For info call: 631-765-5500 Montalk Point Lighthouse built in 1796, is New York States oldest lighthouse. The lighthouse was commissioned by George Washington in 1792.
